Description

The Vättern promenade with its stone quayside and lime tree avenue was built in the early 1900s. The promenade is part of Motala's fan shape. From here, the streets radiate up into the city. At the beginning of the Vättern promenade, in the Vätternrundan finish area, you will find the Vätternrundan sculpture by artist Irene Nordh. It consists of five iron bicycles standing on a surface of limestone representing Lake Vättern. The sculpture was inaugurated in 2005 for the 40th anniversary of Vätternrundan. The limestone is from Borghamn. The hoof surface is upwards to give a sense of the waves of Lake Vättern. The bikes stand in a cluster to symbolize that Vätternrundan is not a competition with winners, but an exercise race where the cyclists pull each other around the lake.

A little further away is another sculpture by Irene Nordh. It is from Vätternrundan's 50th anniversary. The names of the cyclists who have completed 50 races are engraved on an iron plate. The sculpture consists of a twisted limestone pillar with an open iron ring at the top. The open iron ring symbolizes Vätternundan as a race open to all and the twist of the pillar is a cyclists in motion that gives the sculpture life. One side of the column is tracked, traces of bicycles.
