Description
Skällvik church was built in the first half of the 14th century. It was a rectangular hall church without a marked chancel, in gray stone with stepped brick gables. In 1590-93, on the initiative of John III, it was rebuilt into a central church in the Italian Renaissance style. The outer walls were retained, but new columns and arches were added to form a cruciform shape with a higher center, marked by a wooden tower. The gables were truncated, as can be seen from the original blind rings in the façade.
Remaining medieval furnishings are the St. Mary's Cupboard, a 15th-century German work, and a 13th-century Romanesque bishop's chair, perhaps used during episcopal visitations. The altarpiece and pulpit were added in the 1660s and the baptismal font in 1607. A ceiling rose from Stegeborg Castle Church, circa 1580, is a reminder of the church's strong connection to the castle.
