Östgötaleden Ödeshög - Vadstena, St Birgitta Ways South

Ödeshög - Stocklycke: This is the start of the Östgötaleden trail, which is co-signed with the Saint Birgitta Ways and the Fransicus Trail. The orange markings of the Östgötaleden are clearly visible. This stage is fabulously beautiful, but demanding. It is hilly and can be slippery on the rocks if the weather is wet. You'll enjoy views of Lake Vättern and Omberg and rich nature in Stora Lund Nature Reserve. Alvastra is a beautiful ruin of the monastery that St. Bridget often visited.

Lunch is served at Ombergs Golf Resort.

Check that there is dinner food where you stay as there are no grocery stores along the way. GRAZING ANIMALS MAY BE PRESENT.

Stocklycke - Borghamn

Today you will experience Omberg, a popular excursion destination, due to its richly varied nature and fine views of Lake Vättern. Saint Birgitta Ways and Östgötaled follow each other and are well marked.

You can choose the route:

• West which is more demanding with some steep sections and views of Lake Vättern.
• East which is easier to walk and with views of the plain and the bird lake Tåkern.

Both are real gems. If you choose the Western route, don't miss the Western walls and maybe a dip at the shingle beach Älvarums udde where there is also a windbreak. The eastern route has a short detour to the convent of the Daughters of Mary, well worth a visit.

Omberg has many circular routes with different themes if the mood strikes, see information boards.

Check that there is dinner food where you stay overnight because it is sparse with shops.

Borghamn - Vadstena

Follow the trail from Borghamn to the medieval pilgrimage town of Vadstena. The hike goes along a low-traffic minor country road mostly asphalt but through pleasant church villages. The stage offers views of the plain, Omberg and Vättern. There are several swimming spots close to the trail. Explore sights such as stone museums, quarries and Iron Age remains along the quiet country road. Visit churches from the 12th century and sites linked to St. Bridget.

Vadstena offers various types of accommodation, restaurants, cafés and grocery stores.

At the pilgrim center you can land, get your last stamp, a certificate of completed hike and a chat about how you have experienced the hike. The center also offers overnight coffee and breakfast.
