Description
Linköping Castle is located opposite Linköping Cathedral in Linköping's historic quarter, a stone's throw from Stora Torget. Parts of the castle date back to the 12th century, making it Sweden's oldest secular building still in use.
A limestone house with a bailey, kitchen and well room, as well as a limestone cellar - these oldest parts still remain in the western wing of the castle.
Much of Linköping burned down in 1700, including the town hall. By then the castle was abandoned and dilapidated and was used as a city prison. The eastern parts of the castle wings were converted into a prison.
Today, the castle houses the governor's representative apartment and private residence.
The southern wing contains offices and the northern wing has housed the Linköping Castle and Cathedral Museum since 2000. The museum gives frequent tours where you can take part in the exciting history of the castle. Read more on the museum's website
