Description
In Aska village, Hagebyhöga parish outside Vadstena, there is a mighty mound that has long been talked about and seems to constantly change shape. We find it on the spot where six old roads met and in between three medieval churches. Several legends and old records tell of the strange mound. It is enormous in size, oval in shape and completely flat on top. Four old stone roads still exist that lead up to the mound.
In spring 2013, a sensational discovery was made! An investigation using georadar showed that the mound hides the remains of a large and powerful hall building, the remains of large poles. It is one of the few known buildings of its kind in Sweden and is thought to date from the Viking Age. It rivals, among other things, a very large and impressive hall building discovered a few years ago in Old Uppsala!
Östergötland is full of undiscovered places and partly untold stories. These get their own arena at Kulturarv Östergötland - read more about Askahögen.
