Description

Munkastigen's stage 2 starts at the medieval wooden church in Tångeråsa. The stage is suitable for those with an interest in birds as it passes several areas where you can look for rare birds. At the bird tower in Västkärr, you can spot both black storks and meadow hawks. At Hammarsjön, 200 bird species have been spotted, take the chance to see some of these. The trail also passes Skagershult's old church, an unusually well-preserved wooden church. The stage ends at the beautiful Gustavian manor house Svartå Manor, which long belonged to Svartå Mill.

**Lugnsbo is closed for renovation. This means that the parking lot and drinking water tap are no longer available. We are looking at alternatives for 2024.

TÅNGERÅSA WOODEN CHURCH FROM THE MIDDLE AGES

Tångeråsa church is one of Sweden's few preserved wooden churches from the Middle Ages. Today there are only about ten left in the country. In the church you can see two rare medieval stained glass windows from the 14th century. The stained glass depicts the Apostle Andrew with his cross and Mary Magdalene with her anointing vessel.

LOOK OUT FOR RARE BIRDS

There is a constructed wetland at Västkärr. During the first years of the 2000s, many bird species were attracted to the newly created wetland, including the lesser yellowlegs, black-necked grebe, black stork, black-necked bushchat and meadow hawk. Västkärr has a windbreak, bird tower and barbecue area.

Skagershultsmossen is one of the largest raised bogs in central Sweden. There are small forest lakes, damp bogs, swaying swings and sparse edge forests. Many young cranes choose to stay over the summer in connection with the bog and are often heard trumpeting. The little grebe nests in the small pools. The bog is also home to black grouse, and in summer a large number of cuckoos can be heard calling in chorus.

SKAGERSHULT OLD CHURCH

Skagershult's old wooden church dates from the mid-17th century. The church is built of timber with a shingle roof and facade. Next to the well-preserved church is a typical open bell tower.

200 BIRD SPECIES AT LAKE HAMMAR

Hammarsjön became nationally famous in 1967 when the rare black stork roosted in the lake. But there is more to see and hear here, up to 200 bird species have been seen, of which about 90 species are breeding.

SVARTÅ

A mill was built at the outlet of Lake Lill-Björken in 1658. It was in operation until the middle of the 19th century, when it was moved to "Övre bruket" in the present Svartå community. The operations in Svartå were in operation until 1966, when the smelter was blown down as the last charcoal-powered smelter in Sweden. The trail turns off the old road and follows the eastern shore of Lill-Björken to the northern end of the lake, where the Svartå stage destination is adjacent to the old sports ground. Here you will find drinking water, showers and toilets and the possibility to camp. In Svartå, just over 1 km from the stage goal, there is some possibility of provisioning in the form of a bakery, bistro, delicatessen and café.
