Paddling in the Nittälven
The Nittälven is a unique, unregulated water system in Bergslagen that connects several nature reserves to a large wilderness area. Known for its rapids, falls and calm waters, as well as species-rich old-growth forests and exciting geological landforms, the Nittälven offers a varied paddling experience. The most spectacular part of the river is the heavily meandering lower reaches, where oxbow lakes (cut-off river channels) and marshlands spread out. Along the river there are natural forest-like environments with high species richness, including rare lichens and fungi. Historically, timber rafting has characterized the river, with operations such as rock clearing and blasting affecting the aquatic environment.
To benefit flora and fauna, the County Administrative Board has restored several rapids. Fire is also an important part of nature conservation in the reserve, with controlled burns that favor fire-adapted species.
Starting point
- Vårpaddling/Högt vatten: The start for fording and kayaking in flowing water with easier rapids takes place in Vårpaddling/Högt vatten approx. 1 km north of Kolbron. This section is only accessible during the spring flood or after prolonged heavy rain. Paddling on the stretch between Uvbergsbron and 1 km north of Kolbron has ceased since 2020 due to paving in the rapids.
- Normal water level: At normal water level, the lower part of the Nittälven, starting approx. 1 km south of Kolbron, is always passable. This is recommended for a day's paddling.
End point
For a day's paddling along the Nittälven there are several excellent pick-up points:
- Djäkens badplats: A popular and suitable ending point for a day's paddling, located at Lake Ljusnaren.
- Skäret: Skäret also offers a good opportunity to end a day's paddling excursion.
- Stjärnfors bathing place: This is another suitable place to end a day's paddling.
It is recommended to plan the paddle so that it ends at one of these places for an easier end to the trip. For those who want to continue, there is a 400 meter long transport (portage) to Garhytteån (Arbågaån Norra).
