Description

Near Piteå town, in Inrefjärden, is Fingermanholmen, where there was a steam sawmill around the turn of the last century. The island is a ridge of sand and gravel brought here by the Pite River during the Ice Age. There are many traces of human activity here, not only from the sawmill but also from gravel extraction, coal mines and tar pits. There is a network of paths in beautiful countryside as well as a jetty, beach, public sauna, fireplace and toilet.

Facts

The extensive network of paths, jetty, bathing areas with fine-grained sand, the number of barbecue areas, some of which are spontaneously constructed, and organized boat trips by the tourist industry show that the island is a popular destination. Those who visit Fingermanholmen probably do so for its beautiful nature, the beaches and the views of the bay and the surrounding area. There is a new, fresh sauna that is open to the public, free to use for everyone and not bookable during the summer months. When the piers are brought in for the winter, the sauna is locked and remains locked throughout the winter. The island also attracts with an exciting industrial history as it had a prominent role in Inrefjärden's timber handling. The name of the island comes from less pleasant activities. In the past, thieves and other criminals were taken to nearby Tingsholmen to be tried before being taken to Fingermanholmen for punishment. Sometimes the punishment was to cut off their fingers - hence the name of the island".
