Description
This area features some of the richest wetlands for birdlife in the region, home to species such as the whooper swan, common goldeneye, and wood sandpiper. The surrounding forests are filled with ancient forest species like the Siberian jay, willow tit, and capercaillie, while the expansive marshes serve as excellent hunting grounds for various raptors. The landscape is flat and mosaic-like, with forested islands scattered throughout the large wetlands.
An impressive sand ridge stretches about eight kilometers through the center of the reserve, where fire-influenced pine forests dominate and large areas resemble primeval woods. Here, thick pines with thick bark tower over younger trees, and dense self-thinning stands create abundant dead wood. In the north, nutrient-poor spruce and mixed coniferous forests dominate, while the southern half features areas completely dominated by pine.
The wetlands include several types, with iron-rich environments that support rare species like hook-moss, and they have been classified with the highest conservation value in the Norrbotten County Administrative Board's wetland inventory.
