Description

Today you'll see trucks rolling ore from Kaunisvaara towards Svappavaara, but that's nothing new under the sun. Down by the Torne River south of Junosuando, you'll find remnants of the large steel production that was already in operation in the 1640s, when ore was transported by boat and horse and cart between the mine and the ironworks and the settlers settled along the rivers. Palokorva was home to one of the blast furnaces that were part of the extensive Kengis Works, along with the mine and blast furnace in Magsugnsbyn, the copper mine in Svappavaara and the hammer works in Kengis, and you can take a short walk down to the ruins and learn more about how iron was produced in the past.
