Njuollavárrie

Njuollavárrie Nature Reserve invites visitors to explore its enchanting landscape, where spruce trees draped in garn lichen stand alongside ancient, fallen trunks hosting rare wood-inhabiting fungi like cheese polypore and boundary stick.

Since the area was burned over 200 years ago, the forest has grown back naturally, remaining largely untouched. The reserve is predominantly composed of spruce, with some birch and a few old willows and pines, interspersed with small open mires and wet spruce swamp in the northern lowland area.

Surrounded by extensive wetlands, the forests of Njuollavárrie are vital for local flora and fauna, with a portion of the Saltmyran wetland complex included in the reserve's northwestern corner. Traces of human presence can be found throughout the area, including a hearth in the northern part, possibly the oldest evidence of human activity here.

Nearby, remnants of an old barn used for haymaking and coal pits from former charcoal production add to the rich history of this captivating landscape.
