Description

Messaurebäcken Nature Reserve is named after the large, freely flowing stream that runs through the area. The reserve primarily consists of older, fire-pruned natural forests that grow on the northern slopes down to the stream, as well as steep knolls and ravines to the east. There are no designated trails or facilities for visitors, providing a sense of untouched nature. The stream shows few signs of human impact and flows through ancient, undisturbed forests and marshlands on its way to the Stora Lule River.

The forest in the westernmost part of the reserve has largely developed after wildfires, and traces of these can be seen in the form of fire scars. Along the northeastern boundary, there is a human-made stone ridge, likely from the timber floating era. Additionally, remnants of an old house foundation and a Sami summer grave can be found. The area has long been used as reindeer grazing land by the Sami people. The forests of Messaurebäcken are diverse and host rare species such as rose polypore, lungwort, and dwarf cup lichen, which thrive in forests that have developed naturally. Some species, like the Goliath mushroom and orange chanterelle, benefit from the fires that have occurred in the area.

Directions

The reserve is located about 35 km northeast of Jokkmokk, just south of the large Messaure Dam. The most suitable access route to the reserve is from the north, via the dam and down along the western side of the river. The road continues through the reserve with a bridge over the stream, but a couple of kilometers before reaching the reserve boundary, there is a gate belonging to Jokkmokk's Sockenallmänning. There is also a gate at Miessauregården, which means that visitors may not always be able to drive all the way to the reserve boundary.
