Description

Sonfjället rises in lonely majesty above the surrounding landscape. Almost wherever you are in Härjedalen, the characteristic silhouette stands out against the horizon.

The heart of Härjedalen

Sonfjället National Park is a beautiful mountain area in the middle of Härjedalen. A small part of the Sonfjället massif was set aside in 1909 as one of the first national parks in Europe. Later, the national park was expanded to protect the entire mountain and surrounding forest landscape.

The bear is a characteristic species of the area, but the shy animal rarely shows itself. Instead, its presence can be seen through droppings, tracks and uneaten anthills. The area is also home to lemmings, reindeer and moose, as well as a rich bird life, including plovers and grouse. With a bit of luck, you can also see mountain buzzards, golden eagles and lynx.

Nature spectacle

In the Sonfjäll area, one of the final scenes of a dramatic natural spectacle took place when the land emerged from the inland ice. As the ice melted away and the whole ice mass collapsed, the highest mountains in the west could look up above the ice sheet.

Vegetation took off, the first deer made their appearance and, on the heels of the coveted prey, humans followed. There may have been people here for more than 8 000 years!

Fäbod culture and outdoor life

The national park area offers unique opportunities for exciting experiences. Nyvallen is a living pasture that has been in operation since the early 18th century and is well worth a visit.

Both Nyvallen and Nysätern are small nature reserves located within the national park area. Nyvallen, Nysätern and Dalsvallen are great starting points for tours and also offer cabin rentals.
