Description
Bynäset outdoor recreation area is located on western Frösön, about 10 km from central Östersund. Bynäset is a peninsula surrounded by Sweden's fifth largest lake, Storsjön, and offers fantastic views of the mountains. The area has an interesting history and has been used as a combat training area since 1934, which was used as a target for aerial shooting. The last firing at Bynäset took place in 1994 and the air wing itself was closed in 2005. In 2006, all military activities were closed and the consequence of all the training is that the whole of Bynäset and parts of the water area around the isthmus are full of ammunition residues and remain as unexploded ordnance (OXA).
Despite its history, Bynäset is a scenic gem that you just want to visit. In summer 2017, the municipality took over responsibility for the beach strips and now the public is allowed to roam the paths. However, there are specific restrictions that visitors must comply with when visiting the area.
