Description

Myskebackarna is a beech forest reserve with a large number of old, large trees. The area has been cleared of deciduous forest for many hundreds of years, which has contributed to the presence of a number of threatened and red-listed species in the forest. The reserve is difficult to access and is not adapted for visitors.

Today, Myskebackarna, together with a few other smaller deciduous forest areas, are like islands in a sea of spruce. Further back in time, however, Myskebackarna was part of an extensive deciduous forest. According to older survey maps, it can be seen that the area around Myskebackarna has been covered in deciduous forest since the 17th century, and probably even further back in time.

The fact that there has been forest here for a long time has contributed to the fact that the area today contains over 30 red-listed species. These are mainly lichens that grow on the trunks of beech trees, such as herb lichen, sawfly lichen, beech edge lichen, beech spring lichen and red pyssling lichen.

Hills and slopes

As you can hear from the name of the reserve, the area is hilly. The highest parts are located in the northern part of the reserve and measure about 150 meters above sea level, while the peat bog in the south reaches just under 70 meters above sea level. On the higher parts, there are aven rasbranter and bare rocks with a wide view of the Suseån valley.
