Guide to the nature reserves in the county of H...
Björka is the easternmost nature reserve in the area known as Åkulla beech forests. Together with Björkekullen Nature Reserve and Älmebjär Nature Reserve, the valuable natural environments around Björkasjö are protected.
Old beech trees grow on the slopes down to the lake, with elements of oak and pine. A number of herb-rich brook troughs run down through the boulder-rich terrain towards the lake with rich occurrences of, among other things, umbellifer, goldenrod, stinkweed and downy moss, all of which are signal species.
Within the almost 60-hectare area there are also other forest and habitat types such as oak forest, deciduous swamp forest and pasture. The reserve is located within what used to be the pastures and outlying land for the farms in Björka and Svartrå village. Traces of previous land use can still be seen in the form of stone fences crossing the reserve, clearing cairns and a croft in the northern part where the old garden plant wintergreen can still be seen flowering in early summer.
Björkasjöstigen, which on its way around the lake also passes through Björkekullen and Älmebjär nature reserves, is a popular and easy trail that is about 5.5 km long. In Björka you can also freely wander around the beech and oak forests, watch birds by the lake or take a swim at the nearby bathing area. With a fishing license, you can also fish for perch in the lake.
