Description

One of the largest and most magnificent Hälsingegårds. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 1, 2012. Guided tours in summer.

In the picture above you can see the world heritage farm Pallars or as it was originally called Per-Lars. The manor house was built in 1855 and, according to the story, a benevolent gift to the bride-to-be Brita Olofsdotter, who came from a large homestead in the neighboring village of Näsbyn. The building was originally painted red and there were more buildings on the farm than today. To the right of the farmhouse are the bed-sitting room and stables, while the brewhouse and barn are to the left. The bedding house later became a so-called exception to the older generation when the younger ones took over and it has many beautiful murals. The brewhouse was used for brewing beer, but perhaps above all for baking the farm's bread in the oven a few times a year.

Pallars has many carved doors and brocades, the one on the dwelling house has a typical shape, but is much larger than on other farms. The Dalecarlia painter Svärdes Hans Ersson has painted landscapes in the main hall of the house. In one wing, there are distinctive paintings preserved by the "Blue Painter" who is known to have used expensive navy blue pigment. The paintings often depict named places in Sweden, which is unusual.

Beautiful marbling can be found in the farm's halls and staircases, which was a common way of decorating Hälsingland farms in the 19th century.

**Respect the people who live there and do not enter the farm without making an appointment.

World Heritage Hälsingegårdar

The Hälsingegårdar World Heritage Site was designated by UNESCO in 2012. Seven farms received the designation "Decorated Farmhouses". Two of these, Pallars and Jon-Lars are both located in Långhed. The farms show how independent farmers within a geographically limited area were able to combine a highly developed building tradition with a rich folk art in the form of decoratively painted interiors. UNESCO writes in its justification for the World Heritage designation that the farms with their variations, richness and qualities are exceptionally preserved and of outstanding universal value.

**The two World Heritage farms in Långhed are private residences. Tours can be booked in advance or according to information on the municipality's website.

Visit Ol-Andersgården in Alfta, the World Heritage visitor center where there is an exhibition about the farms. UNESCO was established in 1946 by the United Nations, UN. UNESCO works for peace and security through cooperation between the countries of the world in education, science, culture and communication. It aims to promote respect for justice, human rights and freedom for all people regardless of race, gender or religion. In 2024, there were 1,223 World Heritage sites worldwide in 168 countries. Many sites are famous landmarks such as the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu and the Taj Mahal.

Facts

Pallars is one of the seven farms on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The manor-like farm with its two winged buildings has several beautiful cobblestones and a bedchamber with well-preserved wall paintings. The motifs are cityscapes and environments from different parts of Sweden. The stately manor house was completed in 1858 when the eldest son on the farm was to marry the daughter of Alfta's richest farmer.

The farm is privately owned, please respect the opening hours.
