Description

**Ulrika Eleonora, the cross church with its red color is beautifully situated on a hill overlooking the city. It is named after Karl XI's consort Queen Ulrika Eleonora.

The church bears witness to a significant place in people's lives in the 17th and 18th centuries. It has 600 seats including three bleachers. In connection with the founding of the city in 1620, a smaller chapel was built below the current church and this chapel was named Mariakyrkan after Gustaf II Adolf's - the city founder's - queen.

The foundation of the current church took place on September 11, 1685. Until today, the drawings have been considered to be made by the foremost Swedish architect of the time, Nicodemus Tessin the Younger. However, this is somewhat uncertain as Tessin's name is missing from the drawing. However, it may still be a colleague close to Tessin who made the drawings together with Tessin.

The church, named Ulrika Eleonora after the reigning queen, was consecrated on January 15, 1693. Architecturally, the church fell between Baroque and Neoclassicism.

The former style can be found in the pulpit and the choir's epitaphs, while the rest of the church is neoclassical. The beautifully painted windows we still see were added just before the church's 200th anniversary and show the Holy Spirit in half-windows behind the choir façade, the birth of Jesus and the visit of the stargazers, the resurrection and the ascension. The altarpiece was painted by the artist and professor Fredrik Westin, who lived between 1782 and 1862, and depicts Jesus in Gethsemane.

To the west of the church is the belfry, built in 1748.
