Saw mill trail – A journey through nature and history

Saw mill trail is a 13 km hiking and cycling route that takes you through both nature and history.

Every step along the way tells the story of Söderhamn’s sawmill era, which shaped the town between the 1860s and 1930s. Along the trail, you’ll find information boards detailing this fascinating period.

Start your journey in Söderhamn, at the information board just east of Faxeholmen. Follow the signs leading you to the banks of the Söderhamn River, where you turn right and follow the waterway. The trail winds along the river and Söderhamn Bay, taking you down to the quay in Stugsund. In spring, you might spot herring fishermen eagerly waiting for the day’s catch.

Several rest areas along the route invite you to pause, read about the sawmill history, or simply take in the breathtaking views of the Söderhamn archipelago.

Continue along the Jungfrukustvägen coastal road towards the final destination, Sandarne – Stenö. Here, you’ll find the beautiful Stenö Havsbad & Camping, a favorite spot for both locals and visitors. From the beach, you can also take a detour to the serene forest lake Pipsjön via the "Pipsjö trail".
