Description

The Kårböle stave church is also called St. Olof's sacrificial church. The chapel, which is built in traditional technique, with upright logs, was inaugurated in 1989. The interior is predominantly in untreated wood. It was built near the supposed site of the first medieval chapel: a pilgrimage chapel on the route to Nidaros (Trondheim). The Skaga stave church in Tiveden, built in the late 1950s, was used as a model.

The church has an internal ceiling height of 8 meters, the floor area is 28 sqm and the sacristy floor area 10 sqm. The timber for the church was donated by Mellanskog and other forest owners. The walls were timbered by Tor and Anders Lindqvist in Färila. The roof trusses were made by Alfred Mill in Holmen and Per Envall in Skålvall. The floor, in beautiful pine, is a gift from Öhmans Bygg AB. All the forging in the church, with the chandelier as the largest item, was done by "Sme-Lasse", Lars Olsson, in Bysmedjan. The stave church was inaugurated in 1989 by Archbishop Bertil Werkström in the presence of, among others, County Governor Lars-Ivar Hising and about a thousand other people. Among the speakers was Sven Viksten, one of the initiators of the church. On Midsummer's Day 1995, a memorial stone was unveiled at the church, donated by the Wallin brothers in Älmhult. The former vicar Harry Holm has made and donated many of the church's furnishings. The pulpit is made of a 1000-year-old dry pine from the banks of Ljusnan. The stave church is open around the clock in summer and has become a popular destination for people from near and far. It is also a popular venue for weddings, christenings and other celebrations.
