Description
The gallery is the way into the underground, into the bowels of Storberget. Take a guided tour through the long mine passage, into the mining halls deep underground, where light streams down from the open-cast mines and the miner's wife watches in silence. Warm clothes are nice inside the mine.
The mine in Storberget is perhaps one of the most fascinating of the Iron Kingdom's many attractions. Storberget is teeming with mines and shafts. The deepest, Penninggruvan, is over 200 meters deep. Stollgången is a 265 meter long mine shaft straight into Storberget. It was opened at the end of the 18th century to simplify the transportation of ore and drain the mountain of water. Inside the mine, 45 meters below the surface, it is dark and quiet. Inside you'll find ice and snow piles well into the summer.
The walking area around the 'Stollen', as the mine passage is popularly known, is accessible even outside of tour times. You can walk around the mountain on your own and look down into the deep open-cast mines. The view from the top is reached via a 220-step staircase. There is also a nice signposted nature trail to Tjärnäs hytta, a walk of about two kilometers. At Stollgången there is also a small museum, a picnic area and a barbecue hut.
During the summer, guided tours are available and no advance booking is required. Warm clothing is required and sturdy shoes are recommended. There are also specially adapted tours for the little ones.
