Description
Along this route, you pass everything from large horse farms and farms to beautiful open meadows and deep forests. In some places, including Smedsäng, even the station buildings and platforms are preserved. May/June is the perfect time to cycle this route as the trees and plants are just starting to bloom, which adds to the idyllic feeling and you get to experience the Swedish countryside at its best.
Salabanan is an old railway embankment that was built between Gävle and Sala in the late 1800s / early 1900s. Salabanan is not an official trail but you can walk, cycle or ride on it. However, there are long straight stretches so cycling the trail is recommended.
You can follow the embankment from Hagaström (the junction of the railway and Kvarnvägen) down to Gysingebroarna. Then the embankment continues down towards Sala. The trail is continuous with the exception of Valbo shopping center under the E16 and in Hedesunda where you have to round a field to get back to the embankment.

Facts
Description of the stages:
Stage. Hagaström-Valbo E16, about 7 kilometers. Salabanan starts at the railroad on Kraftvägen and then continues on bicycle lanes until E16.
Stage 1. Valbo - Skrockmyra. Approximately 7 kilometers. After E16 you will enter the Salabanan again after about 100 m on Ytterhärdevägen. It is an incredibly nice stretch where you pass several large and beautiful horse farms. A couple of kilometers of the stretch is heavy to cycle as the track is trampled by horses and hence very loose sand. Here, however, you can choose to cycle along a car road the stretches that are worst. However, we recommend cycling along the embankment, as the surroundings are nice.
Stage 2: Skrockmyra - Fäbodsjön. About 12 kilometers. A very nice and easy route that passes rural houses, deep forests and open meadows. Here we recommend taking the opportunity to turn off to Fäbodsjön and take a coffee or food break with a nice view of the lake.
Stage 3: Fäbodsjön - Hedesunda. Approximately 7 kilometers. Easy stretch to cycle through varied forest environments with pine forests and abundant blueberry and lingonberry rice. There is also a snowmobile trail and in winter there are also ski trails along some parts of the route.
Stage 4: Hedesunda - Gysinge. Approximately 14 kilometers. The stretch to Smedsäng is very nice to cycle. After cycling out of Smedsäng, the road is quite monotonous and you pass mostly forest. Some parts of this stretch are also the hiking trail Gästrikeleden.
Stage 5: Gysingebroarna. Approximately 2 kilometers. The last part of the route passes Gysinge nature reserve on the Nedre Dalälven with fine deciduous forest, river landscape and pastures. The route ends with fantastic views at the Gysinge bridges. The experience will be all the more awesome if you manage to time the sunset.
