Description

This is where the modern and important Hässjaån logging channel was built - a "bypass" for timber at the time. In 1922, Silfors såg/Flottningsföreningen decided that a logging channel, a "bypass", was needed to handle a larger amount of timber. A channel was dug and dredged from the upper end of Sillen to just downstream of the sawmill. The lower part was dredged with dredgers and some parts were hand dug. Some parts were paved and the arched stone bridge was built in 1924.

The sorting of the timber began in the upper part of Sillen, the so-called "skiljet", where the timber that was not going to the Silfors sawmill was sorted out and sent on via the floating channel. The timber then ended up back in Hässjaån and further out into Norrsjön where it was sorted and hauled to local sawmills or further out into Voxnan and then to Ljusnan. In Segersta, the timber was bundled together for further transportation out to sea, where large tugboats took care of the bundles and transported them to end users, both north and south.

In 1963, logging in the Hässja River ended and the logging channel had fulfilled its duties of transporting the timber past the sawmill for over 40 years.

The sawmill then switched to more ground-based timber handling and transportation by truck took off.
