Description

Since the Middle Ages, the port of Smedjebacken has been important for transportation to and from Västerbergslagen.

During the summer months, there are parking spaces for motorhomes, mini golf, harbor restaurant and café open. The harbor office with the café provides service and information, gasoline for boats, canoe rental, bicycles, etc.

With the construction of Strömsholm's canal, transportation from Smedjebacken was facilitated and the road to Lake Mälaren and Stockholm was open all year round. The canal was completed in 1795, ushering in a period of prosperity for iron handling and freight transportation.

A locomotive shed remains of the Wessman-Barken railway, where an old steam locomotive can be seen. More specifically, a locomotive manufactured in 1914 by Orenstein & Koppel, which during the years 1933-1953 was used at the then Smedjebacken Rolling Mill. During the summer, the locomotive shed is an exhibition venue, especially for industrial and cultural history exhibitions.

There are many reminders of the heyday, including the harbor warehouse with freight expedition and an exhibition of older boat engines and steamboats that chug around in Barken.

The harbor area with locomotive shed is part of Ekomuseum Bergslagen.
