Description

At the turn of the century Skärklacken consisted of 22 farms. The heyday came in the early 1900s, when the railroad was built through the valley and "cleaved" the pasture. Most of the cottages were used as rallar homes and the "rallar village" could even boast its own shop.

But Skärklacken is an old mountain farm, mentioned in the 1664 list of mountain farms. Most of the co-owners were from Sälje and Bäckbyn, but residents of Forsgärdet, Sunnanbyn and Holsåker also had farms here.

In the 1806-1812 census, Skärklacken had 24 co-owners.

The couple Greta and Erik Mårtens were the last to keep animals in Skär-klacken. They had six cows, some young animals, two horses and two pigs. They stopped keeping animals sometime in the 1950s. Erik Mårtens has said that at most there were about 250 cows in Skärklacken.
