Description
Sweden's highest church at 710 meters above sea level
Next to Högfjällshotellet is Sälen's mountain church, Sweden's highest church at 710 meters above sea level. It was designed by the priest and architect Lars Ridderstedt, and was consecrated on March 30, 1969 by Bishop Sven Silén. The knotted church is 16 x 10 meters, and can accommodate 150 people. It was extended in 1979 with a sacristy, and in 1992 with a kitchen and lounge. The lock on the church door comes from Transtrand's 17th century chapel. The sandstone altar stone comes from Mångsbodarna, and weighs one ton. Nature has shaped the pattern on a sandy beach that cracked millions of years ago. The pulpit is a spruce stump from Fulunäs. The font is made from a willow stump. The bell in the belfry has the following inscription: "Let my sound call you to worship God, on mountains, in forests, in homes, in churches".
There is a beautiful memorial grove at Sälen's mountain church.
