Description
The agricultural landscape at Dikarbacken is part of the stony, lean and wooded mountain landscape surrounding Falun. Hard work was required for the barren soil to yield a harvest, but agriculture was a prerequisite for living in the area, and thus also a prerequisite for mining, which was Sweden's most important source of income in the 17th and 18th centuries. The area became a municipal cultural reserve in 2021.
At Dikarbacken there are two older farm locations, Upper and Lower Dikarbacken, and a small broken agricultural landscape characterized by cairns and stone walls. Around the open fields there are stony outfields that are now overgrown with forest. To the north is the watercourse Krondiket/Gamla Bergsdammen, which was part of the large water supply system to Falu mine. There are also several interesting ancient remains on Dikarbacken, such as a trapping pit, a Trinity spring, house foundations, cairns and cabin remains.
The historic landscape has been overgrown, but is now gradually being restored. Overgrown land is being opened up and cultural and historical remains are being preserved. The old farm with residential buildings and farm buildings on Övre Dikarbacken, which was demolished in the mid-1980s, is being recreated with new buildings. On Nedre Dikarbacken, the old farm is preserved in private ownership.
The Falu Nature School runs educational activities in the culture reserve to create positive experiences in nature for both children and adults. Cows and sheep graze on the old farmland and help to keep the landscape open. The animals are present at Dikarbacken all year round.
Today, Dikarbacken is part of the Falun World Heritage Site. You get a glimpse of the historic landscape as you walk between the two old farm sites - Upper and Lower Dikarbacken. The area also offers great nature experiences. Here you can walk through the historic agricultural landscape, greet the animals grazing in the pastures, have a coffee resting against a stone wall, or look for the old pit, the Trinity spring or the piles of slag. At Övre Dikarbacken, a visitor center will be set up with a picnic area, toilets and changing tables in the recreated farm environment.
It is easy to get around the area. At Dikarbacken there is a system of both landscaped paths and small nature trails. From the parking lot at Övre Dikarbacken there is a gravel path that goes past the farm environment at Övre Dikarbacken and on through the forest to Nedre Dikarbacken and the bridge at Gamla Bergsdammen. Along this path, rest areas and benches will be placed and it is possible to get around with both strollers and wheelchairs. However, note that there are some height differences. The nature trails in the area are not as accessible, but are mainly adapted for hiking. Accessibility also varies over the year.
