Beschreibung
Säbysjön is one of the best places to experience spring and see all the migratory birds coming back. But it wasn't always like this.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Säbysjön's shore meadows began to grow back because they were no longer grazed. The shore forests became denser and the reeds took over more of the lake, which meant that the number of birds at the lake decreased. Järfälla municipality has since worked to create a lake with a myriad of species. Among other things, Igelbäcken, which flows out of the lake, has been equipped with a dam that retains the water during spring and early summer.
The wide reeds have been opened up so that birds can nest on the reed islands without foxes visiting. A large and noisy colony of laughing gulls nests on the reed beds in spring. This does not disturb the other birds nesting there, on the contrary, the loud and noisy gulls scare away birds of prey that might otherwise take both eggs and chicks.
Many bird species.
The large bird tower on the south-eastern shore of the lake is an obvious destination on the excursion. From here you have a nice view of the southern parts of the lake. As an aid to birdwatching, there are pictures of different bird species. There is also a small birdwatching tower nearby with a view of the meadows.
Among all the mallards, coots and wigeons, more unusual species hide in the lake. Look out for brown ducks, teals and black-necked grebes. The brown duck is large for a duck and the male is easy to recognize with its chestnut head and grey back.
Most birds in the lake are seen in April-May and in September. In spring there are both migrating and breeding birds at the lake. The birds are early risers and it pays to get up early.
