Beschreibung
Rådhustorget and Rådhusparken, constitute a culturally and historically very valuable city center. The area is a listed building. Since most of the buildings here were built within a decade of the great city fire of 1876, they are stylistically consistent with each other and make the environment unique. The neighborhood around the town hall is an area that largely gives Söderhamn its character and identity as an idyllic small town.
Here you can walk on cobbled streets and hear the hourly chimes of the town hall clock. The square is dominated by the beautiful town hall with its rich Neo-Renaissance decoration. Over the centuries, the town and its town hall have suffered a series of fires. The first town hall in 1620 was located on the east side of the square. Fire raged and a new town hall was built on the western side of the square in 1683. The Russians burned the town in 1721, but a new town hall was opened in 1724 on the present site. After a fire in 1860, the 4th town hall was built, now with two wings. The last and biggest fire in 1876 left almost the entire center of the city in ruins. The newly built brick town hall was badly damaged, but after extensive repairs it was opened in 1878.
A monument to the city's founder Gustav II Adolf stands on Rådhustorget. The Söderhamn Singing Society raised funds for the monument, which was inaugurated in 1899. Among the people of Söderhamn, the monument is known as the toothpick.
